PORTSMOUTH, NH. September 26, 2017. On Sunday, December 31st, the Seacoast will say farewell to 2017 and greet 2018 with the celebration of First Night® Portsmouth. As has become the tradition with Pro Portsmouth events, the artists of the Seacoast are invited to submit their work for consideration to become the logo for First Night® Portsmouth.
This event marks the beginning of Pro Portsmouth’s 41st year of producing events on the Seacoast (we’re now the only community hosting a First Night in NH!) and once again, the organization looks forward to working with the artistic community in creating this year’s First Night® logo.

Celebrating 40 Years of Market Square Day

To the Editor: If anyone has had the experience of producing an outdoor event in Portsmouth, you know this to be true: you can create a detailed plan, and have great people in place to execute the plan, but you have zero control over the weather.

So, after a truly odd weather week, we were rewarded with an absolutely beautiful June day for the 40th Annual Market Square Day Festival & 10K Road Race.

Thanks go out to all who participated and made this day so very memorable. As is tradition, thousands began the day witnessing one of the great spectacles of Market Square Day: 1,600 runners and walkers making their way up Congress Street as they head out into our neighborhoods.

Cheers to the vendors, businesses, non-profits and others who came out, set up and had a great day…same for all of our performers…once again we were able to feature so many fine musicians on our Market Square Day stages – we are so fortunate to have so much talent here on the Seacoast, and this year was no exception.

Pro Portsmouth Unveils 2017 Market Square Day
Festival & Road Race Logos


PORTSMOUTH, NH. Tuesday, May 23, 2017. The 40th Annual Market Square Day Festival & 10K Road Race marks a first: two logos were selected to mark the event. Pro Portsmouth unveiled the logos and discussed the City’s premier Downtown festival at the NH Art Association’s Robert Levy Gallery.

Pro Portsmouth’s Executive Director Barbara Massar thanked the many area businesses who make Market Square Day possible – Road Race Title Sponsor Access Sports Medicine as well as Festival and Race Supporting Sponsors Liberty Mutual Insurance, Wheelabrator Technologies, Oakhurst Dairy, Portsmouth Regional Hospital, Coca Cola of Northern New England, People’s United Bank, Runner’s Alley, Lyons Law Offices, Bottomline Technologies, Ashton & Co., CPA, The Mall at Fox Run, Seacoast Dermatology and Portsmouth Chevrolet.

Representatives from Access Sports Medicine, Runner’s Alley and Wheelabrator were on hand for the logos’ reveal. “Our Seacoast artists were up for the throwback logo challenge, making this one of the more difficult years in terms of selection,” noted Massar. “So, we decided to try something different and go with two logos.”

Artist Paula Ring’s design was chosen from numerous submissions and will be featured on all Race and Volunteer T-shirts as well as the Festival T-shirt which will be available at the Pro Portsmouth booth in Market Square during the event. Paula is a Cape Neddick freelance designer with over 20 years’ experience in the field. This particular logo project was a fun collaboration for Paula and her daughter. Eight year old Scarlett played a big part in creating this MSD logo as the “lil” art director, giving the logo a young, playful feel.

Jeremiah Gould’s interpretation of Pro Portsmouth first logo sign, designed by Roomet Aring, was selected for the 10K race and will be used for all future branding of the race. Jeremiah is a writer, runner, printer, and designer. Born and raised on the Seacoast, he is a graduate of the University of New Hampshire. Beyond heading up design and marketing at Runner’s Alley, Jeremiah also operates Rye House Press: an intermittent letterpress publishing poetry broadsides and chapbooks. His artwork and design can be spied on running posters, shirts, stickers, and hats all over the state. The third place design was submitted by Kelly Goodwin.

Pro Portsmouth also announced that the NHAA was their featured non-profit for Market Square Day. “The New Hampshire Art Association operates the Robert Lincoln Levy Gallery and off-site venues to service the Seacoast and statewide community of artists. They are committed to bringing art into the community to foster creativity and spirit. We at Pro Portsmouth see the NHAA as kindred spirits and felt that having our unveiling at the gallery was true synchronicity,” noted Executive Director, Barbara Massar.

The Market Square Day Historic Walk takes place on Friday, June 9th at 6:00pm. The Walk begins at Market Square in front of the North Church. “The Walk was the creation of the late, great Bruce Ingmire, and although he last gave the tour in 1992, we at Pro Portsmouth are proud to carry on the tradition,” stated Massar.

Market Square Day features entertainment throughout the day on two stages. Various acts will fill the Downtown with music. Noted Massar, “This year’s musical offerings take on a very diverse sound with new performers’ from Patrick Dorow Productions opening up the festivities on the Main Stage at Pleasant Street.”

An abundance of crafters, local businesses and food vendors will set up ‘shop’ on the streets of Portsmouth. Over 170 will be on hand for this year’s festival.

Parking restrictions do take place in Downtown Portsmouth beginning at 4:00am on Saturday, June 10th. Streets will be posted on Friday, June 9th to indicate where parking is prohibited during the festival. Parking restrictions will be enforced and vehicles will be towed at the owner’s expense. The Parking Garage offers a flat fee of $5.00 from the hours of 6:00am – 4:00pm.

Free Shuttle service (STA) provided by Pro Portsmouth runs from the overflow Lot at The Mall at Fox Run (across from the JC Penny/Lens Crafters side of Mall) to the Hanover Street Bus Station across from the Hilton Garden Inn (Hanover Street Bus Stop) in Downtown Portsmouth. The shuttle runs from 8:00am – 4:30pm; details online at

The event, often referred to as the unofficial start to Summer on the Seacoast, attracts 2,000 runners and competitive walkers for the 10K race and 50,000 festival-enthusiasts to the heart of the City. The Road Race starts at 9am in Market Square. The Festival runs from 9am through 4pm.

Pro Portsmouth Unveils the 2017 Children’s Day Logo

PORTSMOUTH, NH. April 19, 2017. Pro Portsmouth held a Press Conference today to introduce the 2017 Children’s Day logo artist and unveil this year’s logo.

The Press Conference, which took place at Northeast Credit Union, introduced Bella Spechuilli as the artist whose work was selected for the 2017 logo. Bella and Northeast Credit Union’s President and CEO, Timothy J. Collia unveiled the logo to warm applause. Her logo artwork will be featured on the Volunteer T-shirts, the Children’s Day Map and Poster and the Pro Portsmouth website.

The event, which takes place on Sunday, May 7th from Noon – 4:00pm, begins when friends from Character Island arrive in Portsmouth at The Isles of Shoals Steamship Co.’s Dock parking lot. Activities abound from A to Z, as all are invited to follow the Children’s Day map, which takes them all over Downtown where they can enjoy a variety of activities.

Entertainment takes place at the Block Party on Pleasant. This year’s schedule of performers includes Dan, the Puppet Man, the Seacoast Civic Dance Company and Patrick Dorow Productions.

Children’s Day caps off a weekend that Pro Portsmouth and The Children’s Museum of NH are calling, “Kids Take Over the Seacoast.” “We invite kids and their families to join the Children’s Museum in Dover for the 5K and Fun Run on Saturday and head to Portsmouth on Sunday for Children’s Day,” noted Barbara Massar, Executive Director of Pro Portsmouth. The museum’s 5K Road Race is the first in the 2017 Seacoast Road Race Series. “Our relationship with the museum dates back years prior to their move and happily, we continue to collaborate through the Series,” stated Massar.

Pro Portsmouth Unveils First Night® Portsmouth 2017 Logo

PORTSMOUTH, NH. November 15, 2016. And then there was one…the only First Night celebration in the State of NH kicked off the countdown to First Night with Pro Portsmouth unveiling their First Night® Portsmouth Logo at 250 Market, the Sheraton Portsmouth Harborside.

The logo artwork selected for First Night Portsmouth was created by Kelsey Roy; the logo will appear on all First Night® Buttons and merchandise. Roy is a 2015 graduate of Fitchburg State and currently works as a graphic designer on the Seacoast. Second place was awarded to Katie Hansen and third to Kate O’Shea Leith.

The Shareholders’ Community Initiative for First Night® returns with the featured “Show Us the Button” program. Businesses are encouraged to purchase shares and offer specials to those showing them the First Night Button during the first quarter of 2017. According to Massar, it’s a way for businesses to support First Night® and increase traffic to their restaurants and shops in the traditionally quiet, post-holiday period. A special “Show Us the Button” web page will link all participating shareholders to their respective sites as well as note all specials available to those wearing the Button. Individuals and businesses – large and small – are encouraged to sign on as First Night Shareholders. Depending on levels, shareholders receive benefits such as web logo and links, inclusion in eNewsletters and banners at the event on December 31st. Shares’ information is available at: .

Another benefit of the Shareholders’ program is the Fire & Ice Certificate. “It’s been lots of fun. People buy a First Night “share” and they receive a certificate acknowledging their support and ownership in the Fireworks Display and Ice Sculpture,” noted Executive Director, Barbara Massar. “On occasion, the share is given as a gift…you give us the name and we’ll create the certificate for you.”

As part of “Show Us the Button,” First Nighters’ presenting their First Night Buttons at the Labrie Family Skate at Puddle Dock Pond will receive $1 off their skate from 4pm through 9pm on December 31st. “We’re at Strawbery Banke in June for the Market Square Day 10K and now we’re creating a new tradition…back at the Museum on the last day of the year,” notes Massar.
