Pro Portsmouth Unveils the 2017 Children’s Day Logo
PORTSMOUTH, NH. April 19, 2017. Pro Portsmouth held a Press Conference today to introduce the 2017 Children’s Day logo artist and unveil this year’s logo.
The Press Conference, which took place at Northeast Credit Union, introduced Bella Spechuilli as the artist whose work was selected for the 2017 logo. Bella and Northeast Credit Union’s President and CEO, Timothy J. Collia unveiled the logo to warm applause. Her logo artwork will be featured on the Volunteer T-shirts, the Children’s Day Map and Poster and the Pro Portsmouth website.
The event, which takes place on Sunday, May 7th from Noon – 4:00pm, begins when friends from Character Island arrive in Portsmouth at The Isles of Shoals Steamship Co.’s Dock parking lot. Activities abound from A to Z, as all are invited to follow the Children’s Day map, which takes them all over Downtown where they can enjoy a variety of activities.
Entertainment takes place at the Block Party on Pleasant. This year’s schedule of performers includes Dan, the Puppet Man, the Seacoast Civic Dance Company and Patrick Dorow Productions.
Support for Children’s Day comes from: Block Party Sponsor, Northeast Credit Union, and Shareholders: Lyons Law Offices, Treehouse Toys, Portsmouth Regional Hospital, Piscataqua Savings Bank, Isles of Shoals Steamship Co., G.Willikers, River House, Acorn School, NHPTV, Infinite Imaging and ad cetera. The Official Beverage Sponsor of all Pro Portsmouth events is Coca Cola of Northern New England.
Thanks go out to the City of Portsmouth, City Manager and the various City Departments for their support of Children’s Day.
Children’s Day caps off a weekend that Pro Portsmouth and The Children’s Museum of NH are calling, “Kids Take Over the Seacoast.” “We invite kids and their families to join the Children’s Museum in Dover for the 5K and Fun Run on Saturday and head to Portsmouth on Sunday for Children’s Day,” noted Barbara Massar, Executive Director of Pro Portsmouth. The museum’s 5K Road Race is the first in the 2017 Seacoast Road Race Series. “Our relationship with the museum dates back years prior to their move and happily, we continue to collaborate through the Series,” stated Massar.
The Children’s Day map will be available at the event on May 7th and can be downloaded/printed on the Pro Portsmouth website http://www.proportsmouth.org/CDmap.cfm

The Shareholders’ Community Initiative for First Night® returns with the featured “Show Us the Button” program. Businesses are encouraged to purchase shares and offer specials to those showing them the First Night Button during the first quarter of 2017. According to Massar, it’s a way for businesses to support First Night® and increase traffic to their restaurants and shops in the traditionally quiet, post-holiday period. A special “Show Us the Button” web page will link all participating shareholders to their respective sites as well as note all specials available to those wearing the Button. Individuals and businesses – large and small – are encouraged to sign on as First Night Shareholders. Depending on levels, shareholders receive benefits such as web logo and links, inclusion in eNewsletters and banners at the event on December 31st. Shares’ information is available at: http://www.proportsmouth.org/shareholders.cfm .
Another benefit of the Shareholders’ program is the Fire & Ice Certificate. “It’s been lots of fun. People buy a First Night “share” and they receive a certificate acknowledging their support and ownership in the Fireworks Display and Ice Sculpture,” noted Executive Director, Barbara Massar. “On occasion, the share is given as a gift…you give us the name and we’ll create the certificate for you.”
As part of “Show Us the Button,” First Nighters’ presenting their First Night Buttons at the Labrie Family Skate at Puddle Dock Pond will receive $1 off their skate from 4pm through 9pm on December 31st. “We’re at Strawbery Banke in June for the Market Square Day 10K and now we’re creating a new tradition…back at the Museum on the last day of the year,” notes Massar.
Current Sponsors and Shareholders include: Atlas Pyrovision, Liberty Mutual Insurance, Lyons Law Offices, Sheraton Portsmouth Harborside, Cummings, Lamont & McNamee, Piscataqua Landscaping & Tree Service, Infinite Imaging, ad cetera Graphics, and Harbourlight Strategic Marketing.
We Need You!
Additional Corporate Sponsors and Underwriters are also being sought to support the event as well as the annual program of events. Including the cost of fireworks, ice sculpture and performances the organization needs to raise $40.0K. “Over the years, First Night® Portsmouth has become another destination event on the Seacoast,” says Executive Director, Barbara Massar. “We are able to attract and entertain not only our friends and neighbors, but people who travel from all over the country to spend the holidays with us, enjoy great music, restaurants and hotels. But in order to keep the event on the calendar, we need everyone’s support.”
Pro Portsmouth believes that this event is vital to the continued success enjoyed by Portsmouth as a destination for family, friends and neighbors from down the street and around the world.
First Nighters will be able to enjoy a wide range of music and dance. The Button is your pass to hours of great entertainment from 4pm to midnight on December 31st. The Button is now available online at www.proportsmouth.org . In Portsmouth, the Button may be purchased at the Hannaford’s (Pic ‘n Pay) on Islington Street, G.Willikers! (on Market Street) and Diversions/Portsmouth (Congress Street) beginning December 1st.
Pro Portsmouth is also offering online only specials including the ‘Stocking Stuffer’ and Two-Fer for First Night® Buttons; both specials end on December 27th.
It takes upwards of 75 Volunteers to make First Night® happen. All Volunteers receive the exclusive First Night Volunteer Sweatshirt. To be a part of this great celebration as a Volunteer, contact Jennifer Salchunas at (603) 433-4398 Ext. 4 or email@example.com .

Market Square Day: 39 and Still Going Strong
To the Editor:
Thanks to all who joined us for the 39th Annual Market Square Day Festival & 10K Road Race.
As is tradition, thousands began the day witnessing one of the great spectacles of Market Square Day: 2,000 runners and walkers making their way up Congress Street as they head out into our neighborhoods.
Cheers to the vendors, businesses, non-profits and others who came out, set up and had a great day…same for all of our performers…once again we were able to feature so many fine musicians on our Market Square Day stages – we are so fortunate to have so much talent here on the Seacoast.
We truly thank the many area businesses who make Market Square Day possible – our 2016 Program Partner, Northeast Credit Union, long-term sponsors including Liberty Mutual Insurance, Access Sports Medicine & Orthopedics, Oakhurst Dairy, Portsmouth Regional Hospital, Runner’s Alley, and Coca Cola of Northern New England. Thanks go out to People’s United Bank, Backyard Farms, Lyons Law Offices, Bottomline Technologies, Recordsforce, Seacoast Dermatology and SIS Bank – your support was appreciated.
Other supporters of MSD 2016 included: Strawbery Banke, Ad Cetera Graphics, Infinite Imaging, Ceres Bakery, Dunkin’ Donuts – Woodbury Avenue, Panera Bread, Portsmouth Pizza Factory, Moe’s Italian Sandwiches, Trader Joe’s, Hannaford/Portsmouth, The Mall at Fox Run, Middle Street Baptist Church, South Church, Piscataqua Savings Bank, Bank of America, TD Bank, and The Works Bakery Cafe. Thank you for all you do.
Acknowledgements go out to the City of Portsmouth Staff, Public Works, Police and Fire Departments.
Of course we are truly grateful to the Pro Portsmouth Volunteers (many who go above and beyond for us!). They give their time at each of our events and make them true community efforts. From the ice & soda team of MSD, to the neighborhoods who cheer on the runners, our friends at New Frontiers Church (the “clean team” who maintain the Festival footprint), water stops staffed by the Aldrich & Woodbury neighborhoods, SIX03, and Madison Resources – we couldn’t have done it without you. To the folks at the Finish Line, bib pick-up, and at Volunteer HQ – your efforts are appreciated. To our Logistics Team: you literally do all of the heavy lifting: a humble thank you.
Thanks also go out to our Coordinator, Jennifer Salchunas, and a Board of Directors that is engaged, energetic and supportive…we are a team.
To all who support Pro Portsmouth and our Mission of keeping the arts, culture, history and community of the Seacoast alive and vital through events – thank you.
To all who have yet to join in, what are you waiting for? Be Pro Portsmouth!
Next up: See you on Pleasant at the Square for Summer in the Street, Saturday evenings from 5:30-9pm, July 2nd through July 30th.
