Johnson and Emblidge Retain the Lead in the 2008
Seacoast Road Race Series

PORTSMOUTH, NH. August 27, 2008. With 5 of the 8 races in this year's Seacoast Road Race Series completed, Jim Johnson and Jennifer Emblidge continue to lead the field. Mr. Johnson (5 points) has been impressive as the first Seacoast Series finisher in each of the races run so far. Tyler Edwards is in second place amongst the men with 12 points, and he is followed by Dan Poliquin (13), Matthew Darois (19), and Ryan Prolux and David Poliquin (22 each).

Ms. Emblidge results have been equally impressive; she was the first female Series finisher in all but the Children's Museum 5K, and leads with 4 points. She is followed by Lisa Zappala (9), Lisa Wagner (17), and Katherine Pyskaty and Julie Kyrousis (18 each).

In the team competition, the Coastal Athletic Association continues to lead with 22 active Series participants. They are followed by the Blazing Turtles, Rochester Runners, and Team PRH (each with 10 active participants).

There are 250 men and 351 women still in contention for a 2008 Seacoast Series jacket. With only three races remaining, a numbers of runners have dropped off of the Series - some were disqualified for not completing at least 3 of the first 5 races; others were disqualified as they failed to complete either of the two 10K races in the Series - each participant needed to complete at least one 10K (Market Square Day, Saunders) to qualify for a jacket.

Please continue to check your scores after each Series race, and to notify us promptly if you find an error. The more time that passes, the more difficult it is to make corrections. In some cases, if too much time has passed, it may become impossible to correct a scoring error.

The next Series race is the Fox Point Sunset 5-Mile Race on September 6th in Newington.

Following the Fox Point race only two remain: the Great Island 5K (October 12), and the Great Bay 5K (October 25).

Of the five Series races completed so far, the Runner's Alley/Red Hook 5K, the Market Square Day 10K and Saunders at Rye Harbor 10K reached their registration limits. All of the remaining races, the Fox Point 5 Miler (800), Great Island 5K (1,200) and Great Bay 5K (1,000) have registration limits. While none of those races are close to selling out at this point, Series participants who need those races to qualify for their jackets this year are advised to not wait till the last minute to register.

The 2008 Series has expanded to eight races. Runners must now complete 6 of 8 Seacoast Series Races to qualify for SRRS prizes - one of your 6 completed races must be a 10K (there are two 10Ks in the Series). Of the eight races, three are new to the Series: the Children's Museum of Portsmouth 5K (May 3), York Days 5K (July 27) and the Great Island 5K (October 12). Returning to the Series for a fourth year: Runners'Alley/Redhook 5K (May 25), Market Square Day 10K (June 14), Saunders at Rye 10K (August 21), Fox Point Sunset 5 Miler (September 6) and the Great Bay 5K (October 25).

According to Series organizers, a number of area races had been interested in coming on board. Expanding the Series schedule from 6 to 8 races not only affords runners the opportunity to try out several different races, it also expands the Series calendar. Increasing the number of races 'required' to become eligible for the Series jacket and Top Finisher awards (from 5 to 6) was a natural next step when the additional races came on board.

Returning as the Series' Sponsors are Runner's Alley, with stores in Portsmouth and Manchester, NH, and Harvard Pilgrim Health Care of New England.

Please note links to all Series races below as well as registration limits (designated by individual Race Directors for safety, logistics purposes).

2007 Seacoast Road Race Series Sets Record!

Six race directors met in November of 2004 and came up with a 'plan' to encourage running and road race participation on the Seacoast: create a Series that rewards runners on two levels - against the clock and, perhaps more critical, proving that they can start and finish a process by crossing the finish line on five races over the course of a season. So far, so good: 421 people qualifyied for the coveted Seacoast Road Race Series jacket this year, which is almost double the 241 qualifiers in last year's Series. In 2005, the first year of the Series, 136 people earned their jackets by completing at least 5 of the 6 Series races. This year, 94 people have completed all 6 of the races, making them eligible for an additional award: a pair of 'technical' running gloves. The 2007 Series races included the Runner's Alley/Red Hook 5K; Market Square Day 10K; Portsmouth Harbour Trail 5K; Saunder's At Rye Harbor 10K; Fox Point Sunset 5-Miler; and Great Bay 5K.

The overall winner of this year's Series on the men's side is Mark Gibson (5 points). Mark earned first-place points (meaning that he was the first amongst the Series participants to cross the finish line) in all 5 races that he ran. Michael Guarascio (11) finished second, and Tim Roache (14) was third. The awards are based on the points earned in 5 races. Tim ran all 6 races, so his worst score was tossed out in compiling his total for the award competition. On the women's side, Lisa Zappala (7) came out on top. She also ran all of the Series races, so her worst score was not counted toward the award competition. Finishing second amongst the women was Catherine Raynes (11), and she was closely followed by Miae Jacobs (12). Mark and Lisa each earned a $100 award, and all six of the top finishers earned custom glass trophies.

The top team in this year's Series is the Coastal Athletic Association. They earned their prize by having the most team members who completed at least 5 of the Series races. CAA also earned a $100 award.
