With the 36th Annual Market Square Day Festival & 10K Road Race just around the corner, Pro Portsmouth unveiled their 2013 event logo and discussed the City's premier Downtown festival at a Charmed by Charity fund raising event hosted by Alex and Ani at their Congress Street location.

Pro Portsmouth's Executive Director Barbara Massar thanked the many area businesses who make Market Square Day possible – in particular several of the long term partners including the Title Sponsor of the Road Race, Access Sports Medicine & Orthopedics and longtime Festival and Race Supporting Sponsors Liberty Mutual Insurance, Oakhurst Dairy, Portsmouth Regional Hospital and Coca Cola of Northern New England.

Festival and Race Sponsors also feature this year's Program Partners, Citizens Bank and King Real Estate. They are joined by Runner's Alley, Yasso Frozen Yogurt, North American Power, Portsmouth Pediatric Dentistry, PowerAde and Dasani.

Artist Elissa von Letkemann's design was chosen from over 50 submissions and will be featured on all Race and Volunteer T-shirts as well as the Festival T-shirt which will be available at the Pro Portsmouth booth in Market Square during the event. "This year's logo is Pro Portsmouth's official welcome to our "new" Memorial Bridge", noted Massar. "We're all looking forward to the new span and it seemed appropriate to acknowledge that emotion with this year's artwork." The second and third place designs were submitted by Katie Rolfs and Chuck McLean.

It takes a village to make Market Square Day happen - a variety of Volunteer opportunities are open. Information regarding Volunteering for MSD is available by contacting Nicole Pelletier at 433-4398 or volunteer@proportsmouth.org

The Market Square Day Historic Walk takes place on Friday, June 7th at 6:00pm.  The Walk begins at Market Square in the North Church. Market Square Day features entertainment throughout the day on three stages.

Various acts will fill the Downtown with music and dance. "We're very pleased to feature our First Night® "Battle of the Bands" winners, Black Agnes and Kenny Brothers Trio", noted Massar. "This year's musical offerings take on a very diverse sound with Salt River, Pinkerton Raid and Old Saw – just to name a few."

An abundance of crafters, local businesses and food vendors will set up 'shop' on the streets of Portsmouth. Over 150 will be on hand for this year's festival.

Parking restrictions do take place in Downtown Portsmouth beginning at 4:00am on Saturday, June 8th. Streets will be posted on Friday, June 7th to indicate where parking is prohibited during the festival. Parking restrictions will be enforced and vehicles will be towed at the owner's expense. The Parking Garage offers a flat fee of $5.00 from the hours of 6:00am – 2:00pm and $3.00 from 2:00pm – 4:00pm. Shuttle service provided by STA/Pro Portsmouth runs from the overflow Lot at the Fox Run Mall (across from the JC Penny/Lens Crafters side of Mall) to the Hanover Street Bus Station across from the Hilton Garden Inn (Hanover Street Bus Stop) in Downtown Portsmouth. The shuttle runs from 8:30am – 4:30pm.

The event, often referred to as the unofficial start to Summer on the Seacoast, attracts 2,000 runners and competitive walkers for the 10K race and 60,000 festival-enthusiasts to the heart of the City. The Road Race starts at 9am in Market Square. (Race registration closed on Wednesday when it hit the maximum of 2,000 runners/walkers) The Festival runs from 9am through 4pm.

January 2013

First Night® Portsmouth Welcomes in 2013

On a chilly, clear evening in Portsmouth, amidst ice sculptures, a fantastic fireworks display and entertainment offerings in eight venues, thousands welcomed in 2013 at First Night Portsmouth.

The crowds at the fireworks were huge; the display itself was one of the best in memory. An ice-sculpted wizard watched over all who traversed Market Square. The energy 'round town was palpable. What a night!

To all of our supporters and participants: thank you. Together we created yet another terrific destination event.

Our Community Initiative for First Night® yielded many sponsors and shareholders: You are Pro Portsmouth! Thanks go out to our 2013 Program Partners, Citizens Bank and King Real Estate, and to our First Night® Portsmouth Shareholders and Sponsors: Sheraton Harborside, Liberty Mutual Insurance, Hilton Inn Downtown, Residence Inn/Downtown, Portsmouth Regional Hospital, Piscataqua Landscaping, 3 Bridges Yoga, Alie Jewelers, America's Best Inn/Portsmouth, Atlantic Media Productions, Vicky Barrette, Bottomline Technologies, Bowl-O-Rama, Bull Moose, Jack & Dianne Chambers, Dos Amigos, G.Willikers, Infinite Imaging, Izzy's Frozen Yogurt, Jumpin' Jay's Fish Café, Mark Kelliher and Mark Kelliher - In Memory of Joe Shanley, Newmarket International, Panera Bread, Piscataqua Savings Bank, PromoCentric, Michael J. Richards, Sail & Trail/Portsmouth, Caryl Sawtelle – In Memory of Jean Sawtelle, Sise Inn, Peter & Kathy Somssich, Richard Stott, and Warren's Lobster House.

A special thank you goes out to our First Night® "hosts": The NEW Connie Bean Recreation Center, Middle Street Baptist Fellowship Hall, North Church, The Seacoast Repertory Theatre, Temple Israel, UU/South Church, United Methodist Fellowship Hall, and the West End Studio Theatre. Each year, these groups generously give us the keys to their buildings, allowing us to present wonderful performances to all.

Thank you to the City Council and City Staff – so many fine folks work with us in order to get it right.

To those who assist in Button Sales – we are truly grateful; that includes Hannaford/Islington Street, Peoples' United Bank/Seacoast Branches and the Flower Kiosk.

Thanks, too, to our Major In-Kind Donors: Ad Cetera, Ceres Bakery, Hannaford's – Islington Street, Moe's Italian Sandwiches, Panera Bread, Portsmouth Pizza Factory, Ricci Lumber, Ryder Trucks, Savvy Software, Seacoast Coca Cola, Sheraton Harborside Portsmouth, Starbuck's at Market Square, and Foster's Daily Democrat for creating our Official Program.

And if you bought a First Night Button as a way of supporting the event, well, lots of people thank you. From the sound company to the Ryder rentals, from the ice sculptures to each and every performer – and the fireworks – your purchase of a button means that you walked the talk of "I support the arts."  We extend our profound gratitude to you, since your generosity and belief helps Pro Portsmouth to make an event like this happen.

Now, we turn our attention to Children's Day on Sunday May 5th, to the 36th Annual Market Square Day Festival & 10K Road Race on Saturday June 8th, and to Summer in the Street, Saturday evenings in June and July - hope that you can join us.

On behalf of our Board of Directors and Volunteer Coordinator, Ann Wheeler, thanks to all who continue to believe in and support Pro Portsmouth.

First Night ® Portsmouth Needs Your Support!
Pro Portsmouth Continues to Fundraise for New Year's Eve Celebration

PORTSMOUTH, NH. December 10, 2012.  With just about three weeks before the big celebration, Pro Portsmouth continues to fundraise for First Night® Portsmouth 2013.

According to Executive Director, Barbara Massar, they remain shy of their $25.0K goal. "We're at $12,000.00 as of Monday morning," noted Massar, "We are taking a leap of faith by signing contracts for the fireworks and ice sculpture in the hope that supporters and sponsors will continue to come forward. Pro Portsmouth is extremely grateful to those who have already stepped in and stepped up to support this event."

For those who want to get involved in supporting First Night, Shares in the event are still available. Shares not only benefit the event – the Shareholder receives complimentary First Night® Buttons as well as print, Facebook and website recognition. And, if you're having trouble purchasing a gift for the person who seems to have everything - have no fear - Pro Portsmouth has the answer: give them the gift of 'fire and ice'. By purchasing shares in First Night®, you'll be giving them a piece of the Fireworks Display and Ice Sculpture.

A benefit of supporting First Night® Portsmouth is the "Show Us the Button" program. Shareholders and sponsors designate special deals on their products and services for a specific timeframe in 2013 for folks showing the business owner their First Night® Portsmouth 2013. "The feedback has been really good – we have hotels offering reduced room rates and restaurants offering specials like free appetizers with entrees." Massar noted that this was an important way to reward supporters. "We've devoted web pages to Food & Lodging, IT and Logistics partners and now we proudly note our "Show Us the Button" participants with links back to their own sites," stated the Pro Portsmouth Executive Director. "We want our supporters to know that we're all in this together. So this means that folks counting on the outdoor free attractions (the fireworks and ice sculpture) to draw people into town for the First Night weekend need to get involved. After all, Pro Portsmouth can't charge people for gazing skyward at the fireworks display."

It is worth noting that the financial success of First Night® affects the overall financial health of Pro Portsmouth and its ability to produce their entire program of events. "Each of our events helps build a foundation for the next one on our calendar," Massar stated. "We know all too well that a less than successful First Night® will impact our ability to events like Children's Day which is next on our program."

Pro Portsmouth Unveils Marketing Brochure and
First Night® Portsmouth Logo

PORTSMOUTH, NH. November 19, 2012. Pro Portsmouth, now a part of the West End neighborhood, unveiled a new marketing brochure and the First Night® Portsmouth Logo at The Exchange.

This marketing brochure is the result of a year of collaboration and work on content and design with Hawthorn Publications. According to Pro Portsmouth's Executive Director, Barbara Massar, the creation of the marketing piece was the next step and companion piece to the organization's website which was redesigned and re-launched in Fall 2011. "The brochure gives folks a concise overview of who we are, what we do and how we impact the region," Massar stated. Long-time supporter, Infinite Imaging, generously donated its printing services. " We've worked with Bill Hurley and his team for at least a decade, but now when we need to meet or talk, I simply walk across the parking lot since we're neighbors."

Outreach information for First Night Shareholder's this year includes the brochure. Individuals and businesses – large and small – are encouraged to sign on as First Night Shareholders. Depending on levels, shareholders receive benefits such as web logo and links, inclusion in eNewsletters and banners at the event on December 31st.

The logo artwork selected for First Night Portsmouth was created by Carolyn Vibbert; the logo will appear on all First Night® Buttons and merchandise. Second place was awarded to Tom Clark and third to Jessica Packer.

A First Night® "Battle of the Bands" returns on New Year's Eve at the "new" Connie Bean. The Shareholders' Community Initiative for First Night® returns with the featured "Show Us the Button" program. Businesses are encouraged to purchase shares and offer specials to those showing them the First Night 2013 Button during the first quarter of 2013. According to Massar, it's a way for businesses to support First Night® and increase traffic to their restaurants and shops in the traditionally quiet, post-holiday period. A special "Show Us the Button" web page will link all participating shareholders to their respective sites as well as note all specials available to those wearing the Button. Shares' information is available at: http://www.proportsmouth.org/shareholders.cfm .

Citizens Bank was recognized as a returning Program Partner. "At Citizens Bank, our commitment to the communities we serve is a hallmark of the way we do business," said Joe Carelli, President of Citizens Bank, New Hampshire. "We are thrilled to partner with Pro Portsmouth throughout the year to showcase Portsmouth's vital arts, history and culture.  First Night and all of the events planned for the coming season will bring thousands of visitors to Portsmouth to experience all that the community offers."

Additional Corporate Sponsors and Underwriters are also being sought to support the event as well as the annual program of events . Including the cost of fireworks, ice sculpture and performances the organization needs to raise nearly $40.0K. "Over the years, First Night® Portsmouth has become another destination event on the Seacoast," says Executive Director, Barbara Massar. "We are able to attract and entertain not only our friends and neighbors, but people who travel from all over the country to spend the holidays with us, enjoy great music, restaurants and hotels. But in order to keep the event on the calendar, we need everyone's support."

As one of only two remaining First Night® cities in New Hampshire, Pro Portsmouth believes that this event is vital to the continued success enjoyed by Portsmouth as a destination for family, friends and neighbors from down the street and around the world.

First Nighters will be able to enjoy a wide range of music and dance. The Button is your pass to hours of great entertainment from 4pm to midnight on December 31st.

The First Night® Button is your ticket for all entertainment. The Button is now available online at www.proportsmouth.org . First Night's Battle of the Bands
at the "New" Connie Bean Community Center

PORTSMOUTH, NH. October 23, 2012. Pro Portsmouth's First Night® celebration will feature a Battle of the Bands at a venue that is both old and new. The First Night BOTB takes place at the new Connie Bean Community Center on Parrot Avenue and according to Pro Portsmouth's Executive Director, it feels like a bit of back to the future.

"For years, we featured up and coming bands at the Middle School Gym," notes Barbara Massar. "When we brought that element back to First Night in 2010, the school's gym was not an option, so we set up our Battle of the Bands at the Connie Bean. Now for 2012, we'll be at the new Connie Bean which is part of the Recreation Department's facility on Parrot Avenue – perfect." The loss of the Connie Bean on Daniel Street as a gathering place for community is of great concern to Massar. "If you've been a part of our events – First Night, Children's Day and Market Square Day – you know that the Connie Bean on Daniel Street was an integral site for us. But we move forward and we're grateful that the City is allowing us to utilize the new facility on Parrot Avenue."

On December 31st the first group will take to the stage at 8pm. Interested up and coming bands need to complete the BOTB Performance Application available at http://www.proportsmouth.org/battleofthebands.cfm

The BOTB Application should be submitted to
info@proportsmouth.orgalong with any online performance links or mail materials to: Portsmouth, P.O. Box 967, Portsmouth, NH, 03802 by November 16th.

Bands are competing for the opportunity to perform on the Pleasant Street Stage at the 36th Annual Market Square Day which takes place on Saturday, June 8th.

The First Night 2011 BOTB winning band was Old Abode.

Market Square Day Celebrates Anniversary in the Sun

To the Editor:

On behalf of Pro Portsmouth, I would like to thank all of those community partners who made the Market Square Day Festival & 10K Road Race a success in 2012.

Based on the entertainment schedule, we knew there was a good chance that Market Square Day might close with the Beatles song "Here Comes the Sun," but as the day dawned during setup, it struck us: we would have sunshine throughout our 35th anniversary celebration of the Market Square Day Festival & 10K Road Race!

For the fifth consecutive year, we sold out of Booth Spaces for the Festival and for the third time, we hit a registration high of 2,000 (In fact, we reached our registration capacity on May 14th!). Making a new MSD record, 1,772 runners and race walkers crossed the finish line on Marcy Street at Strawbery Banke.

Thousands of festival-goers hit the street once the runners cleared Congress at about 9:05am – and they spent the day perusing the crafts, foods and services at booths set up throughout a pedestrian-friendly Downtown.

We truly thank the many area businesses who make Market Square Day possible – in particular, several of our long-term partners including the Title Sponsor of the Road Race, Access Sports Medicine & Orthopedics, and longtime Festival and Race Supporting Sponsors Liberty Mutual, Oakhurst Dairy and Coca Cola of Northern New England. Pro Portsmouth Unveils 2012 Market Square Day Logo

PORTSMOUTH, NH. Wednesday, May 23, 2012. With the 35th Annual Market Square Day Festival & 10K Road Race just around the corner, Pro Portsmouth unveiled their 2012 event logo and discussed the City's premier Downtown festival at a Press Conference in the North Church.

Alluding to the fact that she is always asked, "what's new?" Pro Portsmouth's Executive Director, Barbara Massar, noted that the organization was sticking with the blueprint that has made Market Square Day successful since 1978. She did note that for this anniversary year, Pro Portsmouth's gift to everyone was to close out the event with a performance by "All Together Now" on the Pleasant Street Stage. "Folks comment after First Night that they can't get in to see the group, so we're putting them in the Street where there will be plenty of room for all to enjoy their favorite Beatles' tunes."

Massar thanked the many area businesses who make Market Square Day possible – in particular several of the long term partners including the Title Sponsor of the Road Race, Access Sports Medicine & Orthopedics and longtime Festival and Race Supporting Sponsors Liberty Mutual, Oakhurst Dairy, Portsmouth Regional Hospital and Coca Cola of Northern New England.

Festival and Race Sponsors also include this year's Program Partner, Citizen's Bank. "At Citizens Bank, our commitment to the communities we serve is a hallmark of the way we do business," said Joe Carelli, President of Citizens Bank New Hampshire. "We are thrilled to partner with Pro Portsmouth throughout the year to showcase Portsmouth's vital arts, history and culture.  Market Square Day will bring thousands of visitors to Portsmouth to experience all that the community offers." As a Program Partner, Citizen's Bank supports a full year of Pro Portsmouth's events. According to Executive Director, Barbara Massar, that level of support is critical to the organization. "It is essential for us to have Partners whose support represents a foundation for our overall programming. From a Partner's perspective, it assures them of recognition and "place" at all four of our destination events."

Sponsors supporting the 2012 event are: Backyard Farms, Runner's Alley, Portsmouth Pediatric Dentistry, Harbour Light Strategic Marketing, Savvy Software, Ricci Lumber, PromoCentric, Infinite Imaging, Ad Cetera, PowerAde and Dasani.

Massar also acknowledged the support of new Partner, King Real Estate. "KRE has played a key role in our ability to relocate the organization to offices in what we all know as the button factory buildings on Islington Street."

Pro Portsmouth's move to new offices was just one of the highlights mentioned when Massar covered what Pro Portsmouth has worked on leading up to its 35th anniversary. "New offices, a new website, an updated logo and a marketing piece have all been part of an effort to keep us moving forward."

The Press Conference introduced Carolyn Vibbert as the 2012 Logo Artist. Carolyn's design was chosen from nearly 75 submissions and will be featured on all Race and Volunteer T-shirts as well as the Festival T-shirt which will be available at the Pro Portsmouth booth in Market Square during the event. The second and third place designs were both submitted by David Lopatich and a member's of Terra Merry's Portsmouth High School Computer Graphics' classes, Aries Fitzsimmons. Vibbert's First Night® Portsmouth 2010 Logo was awarded Best Logo by First Night® USA.

It takes hundreds to make MSD happen - a variety of Volunteer opportunities are open. Information regarding Volunteering for MSD is available by contacting Carolyn Ostrom at 433-4398 or volunteer@proportsmouth.org

"This year's performances take on a very diverse sound with Salt River, The Seacoast Rep, Stanger Than Fiction and Rock My Soul – just to name a few."

An abundance of crafters, local businesses and food vendors will set up 'shop' on the streets of Portsmouth. Over 150 will be on hand for this year's festival.

The Parking Garage offers a flat fee of $5.00 from the hours of 6:00am – 2:00pm and $3.00 from 2:00pm – 4:00pm.
