Market Square Day: 39 and Still Going Strong

To the Editor:

Thanks to all who joined us for the 39th Annual Market Square Day Festival & 10K Road Race.

As is tradition, thousands began the day witnessing one of the great spectacles of Market Square Day: 2,000 runners and walkers making their way up Congress Street as they head out into our neighborhoods.

Cheers to the vendors, businesses, non-profits and others who came out, set up and had a great day…same for all of our performers…once again we were able to feature so many fine musicians on our Market Square Day stages – we are so fortunate to have so much talent here on the Seacoast.

We truly thank the many area businesses who make Market Square Day possible – our 2016 Program Partner, Northeast Credit Union, long-term sponsors including Liberty Mutual Insurance, Access Sports Medicine & Orthopedics, Oakhurst Dairy, Portsmouth Regional Hospital, Runner’s Alley, and Coca Cola of Northern New England. Thanks go out to People’s United Bank, Backyard Farms, Lyons Law Offices, Bottomline Technologies, Recordsforce, Seacoast Dermatology and SIS Bank – your support was appreciated.

Other supporters of MSD 2016 included: Strawbery Banke, Ad Cetera Graphics, Infinite Imaging, Ceres Bakery, Dunkin’ Donuts – Woodbury Avenue, Panera Bread, Portsmouth Pizza Factory, Moe’s Italian Sandwiches, Trader Joe’s, Hannaford/Portsmouth, The Mall at Fox Run, Middle Street Baptist Church, South Church, Piscataqua Savings Bank, Bank of America, TD Bank, and The Works Bakery Cafe. Thank you for all you do.

Acknowledgements go out to the City of Portsmouth Staff, Public Works, Police and Fire Departments.

Of course we are truly grateful to the Pro Portsmouth Volunteers (many who go above and beyond for us!). They give their time at each of our events and make them true community efforts. From the ice & soda team of MSD, to the neighborhoods who cheer on the runners, our friends at New Frontiers Church (the “clean team” who maintain the Festival footprint), water stops staffed by the Aldrich & Woodbury neighborhoods, SIX03, and Madison Resources – we couldn’t have done it without you. To the folks at the Finish Line, bib pick-up, and at Volunteer HQ – your efforts are appreciated. To our Logistics Team: you literally do all of the heavy lifting: a humble thank you.

Thanks also go out to our Coordinator, Jennifer Salchunas, and a Board of Directors that is engaged, energetic and supportive…we are a team.

To all who support Pro Portsmouth and our Mission of keeping the arts, culture, history and community of the Seacoast alive and vital through events – thank you.

To all who have yet to join in, what are you waiting for? Be Pro Portsmouth!

Next up: See you on Pleasant at the Square for Summer in the Street, Saturday evenings from 5:30-9pm, July 2nd through July 30th.

PORTSMOUTH, NH. April 13, 2016. Pro Portsmouth held a Press Conference today to introduce the 2016 Children’s Day logo artist and unveil this year’s logo.

The Press Conference, which took place at Northeast Credit Union, introduced Amy Kindstedt as the artist whose work was selected for the 2016 logo. First Night® Portsmouth Welcomes in 2016

To the Editor:  For 30 years, the local non-profit Pro Portsmouth has produced a New Year’s Eve celebration that invites all to gather in Downtown Portsmouth. First Night 2016 was no exception as we delighted thousands of revelers with music, dance, fireworks, and the sense of community that one can only experience by being there.

The weather cooperated! It was just cold enough for the ice to stay frozen as our master sculptors carved their ice art. As for the fireworks display, well, I cannot remember when we had such a large crowd gazing at the night sky over the South Mill Pond. There is something unique about a December display – a crisp, clean brightness that is simply dazzling.

To all of our supporters and participants: thank you! Together we created yet another terrific community event. To those who joined us as sponsors and shareholders: Thanks go out to our 2016 Program Partner, Northeast Credit Union, and to our First Night® Portsmouth Shareholders and Sponsors: Atlas Pyrovision, Sheraton Harborside, Liberty Mutual Insurance, Lyons Law Offices, Hilton Inn Downtown, Residence Inn/Downtown, Hampton Inns & Suites, Piscataqua Landscaping, McLane Middleton, Cummings, Lamont & McNamee, Wilcox Industries, Breaking New Grounds, Alie Jewelers, Bowl-O-Rama, Peter & Kathy Somssich, Infinite Imaging, Ad Cetera Graphics and PromoCentric. You are Pro Portsmouth!

Thank you to our First Night® “hosts”: Middle Street Baptist Fellowship Hall, North Church, Saint John’s Episcopal Church & Fellowship Hall, The Seacoast Repertory Theatre, Temple Israel, UU/South Church, United Methodist Fellowship Hall and the West End Studio Theatre. Each year, these groups generously give us the keys to their buildings, allowing us to present wonderful performances to all. Looking ahead, we hope that other groups downtown will consider joining – or rejoining - us as First Night® venues. The continued success of an event like this depends on our ability to meet the demand for space. You are Pro Portsmouth!

Thank you to the City Council and City Staff – you are Pro Portsmouth.

To those who assist with Button Sales – we are truly grateful. This includes Hannaford/Islington Street, Diversions Puzzles & Games, G. Willikers, Peoples’ United Bank/Seacoast Branches and the Flower Kiosk.

And a special thank you goes out to Patrick Carey and Karen Kulberg of Carey & Giampa. Last year, we sought the warmth of a vacant Downtown storefront for our First Night Button Sales’ Shop, but with that space leased, we were left out in the cold! That’s where Patrick and Karen saved the day…they invited us to use their offices on Congress Street and it was fantastic. Warm thanks, Carey & Giampa - you are Pro Portsmouth!

Thanks, too, to our Major In-Kind Donors: Ceres Bakery, Moe’s Italian Sandwiches, Panera Bread, Seacoast Coca Cola, Sheraton Harborside Portsmouth, Starbuck’s at Market Square, and Trader Joe’s. Thanks for fueling our efforts – you are Pro Portsmouth!

Thanks to all of the Volunteers who spend New Year’s Eve with Pro Portsmouth. By giving us the gift of your time, you are indeed Pro Portsmouth.

And if you bought a First Night Button, well, lots of people thank you. Your purchase went towards the support of everything from the sound company to the Ryder Truck rentals, from the ice sculpture and fireworks to each and every performer. Buying a button meant that you walked the talk of “I support the arts.” Profound gratitude to you since your generosity and belief helps Pro Portsmouth make this happen.

Finally, to all those Pro Portsmouth Board and Staff members who have played a part in 30 years of celebrations, thank you. All of us realize that we are stewards, charged with the responsibility of carrying on an important tradition.

Now, we turn our attention to our Annual Appeal, Children’s Day, Market Square Day Festival & 10K Road Race, and Summer in the Street. We hope you can join us.

We are Pro Portsmouth.
